Guardian Media Group director of digital strategy, Simon Waldman is to give the keynote address at the Music Publishers Association and Music Ally’s digital music seminar later this month. The discussion will focus on managing the new revenue streams such as Concert Hospitality sales.

The event titled, MPA Seminar 2010: Digital Music The Odessey, will be held at the PRS for Music Boardroom on November 23.


Indigo Books & Music Inc. (TSX:IDG) says consumers have responded favourably to its Kobo electronic book business, offsetting lower sales at its bricks-and-mortar locations across Canada.

Indigo's overall revenue rose to $214.8 million in the three months ended Oct. 2, a gain of $7.8 million from the comparable period last year.

But the growth came at a cost, with Indigo recording a $1.7-million loss, or seven cents per share, in the second quarter of its 2011 fiscal year.


It has only been five days since there had been reports about Apple increasing the 30 second song preview facility in their iTunes digital music store to a longer 90 seconds. India Infoline reported that Nokia is launching a new concept by the name "Ovi Store Shorties". For the uninitiated, Nokia has an online music store operational in India by the name of Ovi Music. "Shorties" are basically songs that are shortened to 90 seconds of their actual length.


The music industry may be bellyaching about how tough times are as revenue continues to sink like a rock for traditional music companies, but don't tell that to Jeff Price, CEO of TuneCore. Whilst new records are broken every week (Take That Tickets sold out in 2 hours) some commentators aren't happy with where the music industry is going.

"Unit sales are up, not down," Price said. "That means people are buying more music, not less."


Bon Jovi is getting into social gaming today by distributing the band’s digital music through games on Facebook. The band is partnering with CrowdStar to bundle its digital album, virtual goods and virtual currency together on the gaming platform’s social games—Happy Aquarium, Happy Island and It Girl.


Mufin, the Berlin-based digital music company, has today announced that the latest free release of its mufin player will include the world's first '3D' music navigation feature.

Mufin player 2.0 will include mufin vision, a new 3D music interface which uses three distinct song attributes to display digital music collections as a visual map. The result is that mufin vision provides music fans with a fast, intuitive way to explore the thousands of tracks on their PCs or mobile phones using either a mouse or touch screen interface.

Nineteen groups, including the Canadian Federation of Musicians, the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists National (ACTRA), the Writer's Union of Canada and the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), have written a letter to Industry Minister Tony Clement and Heritage Minister James Moore saying the exclusion of compensation for digital recordings in the Conservative's copyright bill is "unjustifiable."

Apple Hire Legal Digital Music Expert

Billboard reports that Apple has hired Elliott Peters, a senior vice president and head of digital legal affairs at Warner Music Group, to manage the company's legal team overseeing iTunes and MobileMe services in Europe.

According to an internal memo obtained by Billboard, Peters is taking on the role of corporate attorney director for iTunes Europe and Internet services, based in Luxembourg, where he will manage the European legal team for iTunes and MobileMe services. He's been with WMG since 2000.
